Just started with Lightroom CC? It’s a little confusing at first, right?
Or maybe you’ve got some experience but looking to learn a little something new.

I always find that the best way to learn things is to just jump in and give it a go. Second to that is peering over the shoulder of a pro and watching exactly what they do, how they do it, and why they do it.

That’s why, when I first started out, I thought presets were pretty darn cool. They allowed me to get in and give it a go, while also “seeing” what someone with more knowledge and skills has done.

Although I haven’t used presets from others for a long time, I do quite regularly use some of my own. These are often added to create consistency between multiple photographs from the same session, apply a base set of adjustments that I’d normally use, and simply cut down on time.

As a way of giving back, I wanted to share some of my custom presets to help you find your way around Lightroom CC and hopefully show you a little more about how to achieve specific looks.

These presets are 100% free to download and use for personal or commercial work – no attribution required. Of course, you are more than welcome to tag me on Instagram @jyebeckett or drop me a note to say thanks. I’d also be keen on checking out what you’ve created using these presets.

The presets

Here's a preview of each preset you'll find within this pack. 90% of my photographs use one of these 4 presets as a base. In some cases I'll apply one of them and have an almost complete image while for other I may spend additional time tweaking the settings to get things perfect.

1. Subtle Morning

When to use: You'll want to apply this preset to images captured during the morning blue hour, just before or right as the sun begins to breach the horizon. It'll help emphasise shadows, add some contrast to the sky, bring out the blues and give a little treatment to the warmer colours.

2. Savage Sunrise

When to use: Think clouds... lots of them. This preset is designed to soak the sky and clouds in the warm colours you'd normally capture at sunrise. This works great on mornings with an 80%+ mid & high cloud cover with a good splash of natural colour.

3. Hidden In The Shadows

When to use: Black points, baby. This is a preset you'll want to use on photographs that, straight out of the camera, have a fair chunk of darker shadows and black areas. It'll reduce the black point and adjust the shadows to give your image more of a matte look.

4. Fierce Sunsets

When to use: You guessed it... Sunsets. Although, to be honest, it'll work just as well for a sunrise as well. This one really drowns out the blues and has an emphasis on reds and oranges and darker shadows.

A quick note

It's important to remember that, just like any other presets, free or purchased, you can't just slap these on any image and expect amazing results. Although it's possible that each of these could work well for any photograph, you will likely have to adjust some of the settings to best fit your photographs composition, lighting, location and things like brightness and shadows.

How to install your new presets (Mac & Windows)

After entering your email above, you'll be sent an automated email containing a download link for the presets. Here's what you'll need to do once downloaded.

1. Unzip the preset archive downloaded from the email.
2. In Adobe Lightroom CC (on desktop), open the right hand side editor panel and locate the Presets button right down the bottom.
3. This will open an additional panel to the left which houses all of the currently installed presets. Click on the ellipses in the top right hand corner and select "Import Presets" from the drop-down menu that appear.
4. You'll then want to navigate the unzipped folder containing my presets and click each one to import. If you've got Creative Cloud switched on, they'll also sync to Lightroom CC mobile where you'll also be able to use them.
